Protect Yourself against Hackers

Published by cosmodata at 10:53 am under Your computer Edit This

In many ways a hacker is considered to be a computer enthusiast who has a vast knowledge about how to get information. The problem starts when that person obtains personal information and uses that information for personal gain. This is considered to be a computer trespasser and is an illegal practice. People who are caught hacking personal information can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The problem with prosecuting a security hacker is they are often smart enough to avoid detection. You should be aware of hackers and what they are capable of doing. This is how many people get their identity stolen because hackers are smart enough to hack into the needed information.

Hacking has actually been around for several years but the public was not aware of its existence. When the movie War Games was released it raised public awareness that hackers could actually be a threat to our national security. Most of these hackers are teenagers who are highly knowledgeable about computers and computer programs. Several years ago a group of teens who called themselves the 414s hacked into computer systems across the United States and Canada. Their activities drew national attention and the news media quickly picked up on the story. This is what prompted lawmakers to introduce legislation which provided swift and severe punishment for anyone caught participating in this activity.

Anyone who uses the Internet should always be aware of hackers who are out there waiting to get their hands on your information. Personal information should be handled very carefully when doing business over the Internet. You should never give your information to any website unless you are certain it is a secure site. There are ways to verify this if you are unsure. Many sites use a blue check mark which is followed by a saying that says “this site is verified hacker safer”. Others will say scan alert, hacker safe. These sites actually pay people to keep their website safe from hackers. These companies will do daily scans to pick up on any hacker activity. For the consumer, this tells them the site is a safe place to do business. For the business, it tells their prospective customers that their site is safe from hackers and more people will do business with a site that takes the extra precaution.

When purchasing anything over the internet you should always know the company you are dealing with. Don’t give out credit card information to anyone you aren’t positive they have a secure site. Even then hackers can often get personal information. If you use your credit card online you should always check your activity to make sure somebody has not used your card number to purchase other items.

It is also good to protect your computer at home from hackers. There is software you can purchase that puts up a firewall and prevents others from having access to your information. It is a wise choice to invest in a good software program, even if it cost you a little more money. In the long run it could save you a lot of headaches and money.
